New Xbox 360 Disk Format Not Compatible With Certain 360 Models

Original NXTGamer.com article

May 18th, 2011 at 1:14 pm
Kotaku have reported that the upcoming Xbox 360 firmware, that brings in compatibility for the new disk format, will prevent a small number of consoles from being able to play certain games.  Don't fret though, as Microsoft will be handing out brand new Xbox 360 S consoles with 250gb hard drives to those affected.

The story goes that the new XGD3 disk format, that adds 1GB of storage to 360 DVDs, might not be compatible with certain Xbox 360 DVD drives.  This is the first time that the firmware has been rewritten so this shouldn't really come as much of a surprise.

Microsoft stated with regards to affected consoles:
"Any Xbox 360 owners receiving this error are encouraged to contact us at www.xbox.com/support/contact so we can verify if the console has been impacted."
Should the update be downloaded onto a hacked Xbox 360 it would instantly kill their ability to play pirated software.  This would be due to the fact that the code that was originally hacked on the Xbox 360 disk drive will have been replaced entirely by the new code.

Along with this inconvenience to the pirate crowd, this new firmware will bring in a completely new anti-piracy mechanism to replace the current compromised system.  On top of this new measures are being enacted with the help of developers that will scan the game DVD periodically during gameplay, as opposed to the scan at start-up, to ensure that a legal copy is being used.  Microsoft are hoping that in-game checks will be much harder to work around and with control of these features in the developer's hands, pirate copies of games could become non-functional after being played for a short length of time.

It's clear that Microsoft are putting a lot into this change of disk format and are expecting a lot out of it in kind.  With the recent events surrounding the PSN downtime, if it signifies a step up in console security it can only be a good thing.

Lords of Football Announced by Geniaware

May 17th, 2011 at 4:18 pm
Today Italian developer 'Geniaware' announced 'Lords of Football', a football lifestyle game set in a free roaming environment in development for the PC and next-gen consoles (whatever that means).

In Lords of Football you'll play the part of first team manager in a game of strategy, exploration and creativity.  Played in first person the game sees you planning and maintaining football club training sessions on a day-to-day basis.  On top of this you'll manage some of the more personal and social aspects of your players lives such as nights at the pub, which will affect your players' on-pitch performance.

You also have to balance trying to keep both press and players happy while tracking your players' lifestyle habits individually, dealing with the president's transfer market issues and lots more.  'Lords of Football' will simplify this by offering you revolutionary gameplay with many tools to facilitate deep customisation and simulate real life in and out of work.

There is also an advanced AI system that has varied and realistic character types conversing with your players on and off the pitch, something that will presumably also hold sway over your players' performance on the ball.  To make things even more interesting you'll have to manage your own relationships with the players on your team to keep them encouraged and hold their trust as a manager.

Claudio Giacopazzi, General Manager at Geniaware, said:
‘Lords of football is being developed to open up the football genre through innovative gameplay solutions. We aim to entertain a wide audience providing a new approach to the football video game in a way not seen before in a sports title’.
Does this get you all hot under the collar?  Let us know in the comments section!

Online Gaming to returning to PSN imminently?

Original NXTGamer.com article

May 13th, 2011 at 11:12 am
Reports are emerging that the developer's version of the Playstation Network came back online this morning.

Eurogamer reports that this could indicate an imminent return for the online gaming component.

A NeoGAF user reported:

"The internal PSN developer network is online again, at least it seems for some, although things are still a bit shaky at the moment such as lack of new account sign up,"
Excellent news for PSN users, having missed previous deadlines for reactivation Sony are under a lot of pressure to deliver a solution to the down time and it sounds like they're finally getting down to it.

PSN was shut down on April 20th after it became clear that the service, along with user information, had been compromised.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations is "no rush job"

Alexandre Amancio has told GameInformer in a video interview that Assassin's Creed: Revelations is "no rush job".  Click here to watch the full interview.

He told GameInformer:
"Production itself takes about a year, but keep in mind we've planned it far in advance, It's not like a hundred people crunching it for a year. It's a huge team across many studios with different types of expertise and we fit them all together."

"We always aim for a 90-plus game."
Amancio's job is to co-ordinate the six Ubisoft studios that are working on AC: Revelations.  Development is being handled by most of Ubisoft Montreal's 2000-person workforce alongside Ubisoft Québec, Ubisoft Annecy, Ubisoft Bucharest, Ubisoft Singapore and Massive.
"We decided to give players a lot of the answers they've been waiting for since AC II, things with Minerva, Juno, a lot of details of the end of the world plotline in 2012. As we get closer and closer to the actual 2012 marker, the franchise is concluding its major opus."
Minerva and Juno are members of a race that lived on earth before humanity (and possibly created humanity) that were seen at the ends of AC2 and AC: Brotherhood respectively.
"We're going to reveal a lot of stuff about the first civilisation storyline, the Ezio and Altair storylines and explain why Ezio is so important to the franchise... What role Altair plays in that destiny, and how Desmond fits in,"
Revelations is to set the scene for Assassins Creed III, as Ezio goes from master assassin to mentor.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations will introduce gameplay elements such as Templar Dens, a hookshot and bomb-creation also feature.

Dark Souls delayed by PSN downtime

Dark Souls developer 'From Software' has admitted that game development has been slowed by PSN down time which has now reached three weeks.

The game's producer Kei Horono told MCV "It has impacted us and held the team back a bit," in an interview at Namco Bandai's Level Up event in Dubai.

"But we will be out in early October. We won't miss that."

Dark Souls isn't the only game to be suffering at the hands of PSN downtime however.  Online heavy games like the recently released Brink have become all but impossible to play to their full potential and Portal 2 owners are unable to play with their friends over their PS3 or even activate their free Steam copy until PSN comes back on line.

Sony have announced that they plan to have the service fully rolled out by 31st May with online gaming being the first feature to return.

Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to Demon Souls and will be available on Xbox 360 and PS3 in, you guessed it, October 2011.

Upon questioning SCE Corporate Communications Director Patrick Seybold commented "We're working to get the network back on as soon as we can" neither denying nor confirming the imminent reappearance of online play.  Bloomberg reported yesterday that Sony spokesman Shigenori Yoshida said that Sony was planning to have the PSN service fully rolled out by May 31st.

PlayStation Europe community manager also stated via Twitter that Sony is working towards restoring all PlayStation Network services by May 31, adding that online gaming will return a little earlier.

FIFA 12's New Engine "Biggest Change" Since FIFA 07

May 9th, 2011 at 12:29 pm
EA Canada are making some pretty big claims about the next game in the FIFA series.

Speaking to OXM's Mike Channell on the new Impact Engine developed for FIFA 12, EA Canada has stated:
"It's the biggest change we've made since we rebuilt the engine for next-gen consoles, I mean we rebuilt the engine from scratch, so that's as big as it can get, but since then we're ripping out a big chunk of the game and it's a massive change."

"It solves a lot of problems for us this year, it gives us better accuracy, better momentum, more realistic outcomes, solving a lot of situations that we just tried not to get into before,"

"Now we're opening up the game so you can get into these situations and see new cool and interesting things, but also it lays a foundation for places for us to go in the future,"
One of the enhancements detailed is to do with the tackling system.  If a tackle only clips a player's leg then that player will be able to mostly keep their balance and carry on, but if a tackle gets both legs then the player will go down.  The new Impact Engine also does away with the pre-made animations of previous iterations in favour of Euphoria Engine (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Red Dead Redemption) style animations, greatly enhancing realism.
"When you think about the resilience of the player and the ability for someone to take a hit and continue dribbling, we didn't have that ability before in our game because you were either dribbling or you were stumbling. Now we have that grey area and it's something we can play with down the line, just to give you some vision of where we see these kind of things going."
If you're just desperate for more information on this next installment in the FIFA series head over here to buy OXM issue 73 and read to your heart's content.

You can also run along to your nearest game-selling shop and buy the game later this year.

Alan Wake 2 on the way?

Games developers just can't seem to take the hint that if they mention a hitherto unannounced game on their CV someone is bound to notice.

The latest occurrence of this is concerning the Alan Wake series, or more aptly, the next Alan Wake game in the series - Alan Wake 2.  The CV for the Halon Entertainment employee Althea Suarez Gata has been found to mention that she was the Previs Artist on some Alan Wake 2 cinematics.  A lot of people lie on their CV's but to pretend a game exists if you don't know that it ever will?

If you've played through the entirety of the original Alan Wake plus DLC you'll know that it's left wide open.  Let's just say this all but confirms that a sequel to Alan Wake is in the works.

To add to the stack of evidence a job listing for a Senior Level Designer position at Remedy recently called for someone to join its "AAA console team", further hinting that the team is working on something big.

Total PSN Downtime Could Hit up to Six Weeks

Original NXTGamer.com article
__________________________________________________________

May 9th, 2011 at 12:00 pm
Sony spokesman Shigenori Yoshida has told Bloomberg that Sony plans to have PSN services up and running in their entirety by May 31st.

The PSN service has been in the process of adopting a new and improved security system since April 20th when the service was shut down due to possible data theft.  Originally Sony had stated on May 1st that they planned to start rolling out features of the service within a week of boosting security measures.

If the service does take until May 31st to get up and running the downtime will have amounted to six weeks, which is far longer than anyone could have imagined when this debacle began.  It would also mean that the service will have been offline for the release of the online-heavy FPS Brink and the widely anticipated L.A. Noire, preventing players from taking part in Rockstar Social events until service resumes.  Portal 2 owners are similarly unable to activate their PC version of the game on Steam while PSN is down.  As compensation for these grievances Sony are planning on giving every PSN user two free PSN games and a months free PSN+.

Obviously this series of events is not directly the fault of Sony, but it shows how lax their security was once the original hurdle of breaking the system was leaped nimbly over.  This could be a damaging blow to the future of the console as it will now be looming over prospective customers as well as those directly affected.

Sony have also stated that they won't bring PSN back online until they're certain that the security is air-tight.  On the Playstation Blog head of communications Nick Caplin said:
"As you may know, we've begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system.  We're still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system.  Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration.

"Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.  As you've heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe.  We won't restore the services until we can test the system's strength in these respects.

"When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week.  We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system.

"We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we're doing everything we can to make it happen.  We will update you with more information as soon as we have it.  We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage."
This could potentially mean that PSN will end up being down for even longer than suggested but, with such impetus on the service coming back online as Brink, Portal 2 and L.A. Noire, I don't think that will be the case.

L.A. Noire coming to the 360 on three discs

Original NXTGamer.com article
__________________________________________________________

May 6th, 2011 at 4:01 pm
The age of the Xbox 360 hardware is beginning to show, as reports from Rockstar tell us that the Xbox 360 version of L.A. Noire will come on three discs while the PS3 version will come on a single Blu-ray.

A representative of Rockstar told Kotaku:
“L.A. Noire was always going to be a massive game, from the size and detail of the world to the length of the cases, and of course, the sheer amount of MotionScan data required for the faces of over 400 actors in-game,” said Rockstar’s Jeronimo Barrera “To tell the story and make the game we wanted to make, we knew that it was going to take an entire single layer Blu-ray disc and three Xbox discs.”

“Since the game is built around the concept of progressing through individual cases from desk to desk, players on Xbox will find disc-swapping is hassle-free. In fact, players will only need to swap discs twice at natural breaks between cases without interrupting the flow of the game.”
This really does highlight the biggest difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3: Storage space.  Perhaps the new disc format Microsoft are testing just now will go some way to resolving issues like this but, with this game coming in at around 25gb and games growing in size all the time, it seems unlikely.

PSN back soon, but for how long?

May 6th, 2011 at 3:29 pm
PSN users worldwide may be about to have their patience rewarded, however Sony are wary of further attacks to the service.

Sony have indicated that PSN is in the final stages of testing before coming back online, apparently rebuilt, although they have given no specific date for the service to return.

Sony stated:
"Today our global network and security teams at Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment began the final stages of internal testing of the new system, an important step towards restoring PlayStation Network and Qriocity services,"

"As previously mentioned, we’ve been working around the clock to rebuild the network and enhance protections of your personal data. It’s our top priority to ensure your data is safe when you begin using the services again.

"We understand that many of you are eager to again enjoy the PlayStation Network and Qriocity entertainment services that you love, so we wanted you to be aware of this milestone and our progress. We will provide additional updates as soon as we can."
Soon after came the worrying news relayed by CNET that chatter on the IRC channel used by hackers suggested that another attack is planned on PSN this weekend.

Hopefully Sony's "rebuilt" service will be a little bit more resilient to these attacks than it has been over the past couple of months.

Mass Effect 3 delayed until early 2012

The much awaited culmination of the Mass Effect franchise, Mass Effect 3, has been pushed back to early 2012.  The delay was released via a post on the Bioware message board and Facebook page.

The team stated:
Mass Effect 3 will be released in the first three months of 2012. The development team is laser focused on making sure Mass Effect 3 is the biggest, boldest and best game in the series, ensuring that it exceeds everyone’s expectations.” – Casey Hudson, Executive Producer Mass Effect series
This is unfortunate news as I'm sure most gamers are very much looking forward to Mass Effect 3, but it sounds like it's for polish as opposed to "business reasons" (looking at you, Gears of War 3).  This will surely free up some time for us to play through the slew of new games that will make their 2011 release dates this year.  Use this time wisely, but keep your eye on the horizon!

In the mean-time click here to check out our review of the most recent Mass Effect 2 DLC 'Arrival', which bridges the gap between Mass Effect 2 and 3.

4oD and ITV player coming to Xbox Live?

Original NXTGamer.com article
__________________________________________________________

If Broadcast’s “unnamed insider” (via Tech Radar) is to believed, Microsoft will be changing it’s tone soon and allowing both ITV player and 4oD services to grace XBOX Live.
As it stands Sky Player is the only current way to watch TV programmes on the Xbox 360, providing both live TV and On Demand programmes and films via a monthly subscription.
“It is taking a progressive view and opening up the platform to a number of people,” said the “unnamed insider”.
“Broadcasters are interested in securing a presence on Xbox because they have all seen how well Sky has done from the distribution deal. And there has been an internal shift to making it easier for them to get onto the platform.”
Last year the BBC attempted to bring the BBC iPlayer service to XBOX Live but the deal never went through due to Microsoft’s insistence that the service would be for Xbox Live Gold members exclusively.
These services have been on the PS3 for a while now, excluding Sky Player.
